OAS: Elections in Venezuela Will Not Be Free and Fair

first_imgBy ShareAmerica December 01, 2020 The General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) passed a resolution October 21 declaring that the illegitimate Maduro regime’s December 6 elections in Venezuela will be fraudulent.“We all know there is more work to do to uphold our hemisphere as a hemisphere of freedom,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during his virtual remarks to the 50th OAS General Assembly. “Nicolás Maduro’s plan to hold fraudulent elections in December to steal the National Assembly — Venezuela’s last democratic institution — is only the latest abuse of power.”Colombia introduced the resolution, stating that, as it stands, free and fair elections cannot be held in Venezuela.Elections that are free and fair “will depend on the existence of the necessary conditions of freedom, justice, impartiality, and transparency,” the resolution states, “with guarantees for the participation of all political actors and citizens and the release of political prisoners, under reasonable deadlines for their organization, and with independent and credible international electoral observation.”The resolution details concerns about the illegitimate regime’s violation of national election laws. It asserts the regime actively seeks to undermine the electoral process, which could eliminate the last democratic institution in Venezuela: the National Assembly. The resolution also reaffirms the legitimacy of the National Assembly and the need to protect members of the institution from attacks by the illegitimate Maduro regime.Addressing the dire and worsening human rights situation in Venezuela, the resolution calls for immediate, unimpeded access to deliver humanitarian aid to the most crisis-stricken and vulnerable populations. The OAS General Assembly resolution says more needs to be done in Venezuela before democratic elections can take place.“We must recover democracy in Venezuela,” said OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro.last_img read more

Credit unions begin recovery process even as Harvey continues

first_imgSoutheastern Texas credit unions have begun the long process of recovery even Tropical Storm Harvey continues to batter the region. The Cornerstone Credit Union League reported roughly 50 credit union closings–and numerous additional branch closings–in southeastern Texas as of late Monday morning.“We’re in fairly constant contact with our credit unions in the gulf area,” said Jon Gorman, senior vice president of communications and outreach of the Cornerstone Credit Union League. “We’re continually reassessing what is going on down there, and have a disaster response team in place and actively delivering support the credit unions affected by this disaster.”Gorman said travel is the one of the biggest issues for many credit union employees with regard to assessing Harvey’s impact on credit union operations. “Anecdotally, we’ve heard employees can’t get to their credit unions because of the flooding, or they can’t get out of their neighborhoods because of the flooding.” 8SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr continue reading »last_img read more

Pardew dismisses squad problems

first_imgAlan Pardew has blasted talk of a rift within the Newcastle camp as he attempts to guide the club out of relegation trouble. The Magpies have adopted a siege mentality in the wake of last Saturday’s 6-0 humiliation at St James’ Park, which left the club fighting for its Barclays Premier League future. Rumours of unrest within the dressing room surfaced, prompting the official club website to release quotes from senior men Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse insisting all was well. But Pardew came out fighting as he was questioned on the allegations. He said: “As far as I am concerned, the group is very much together, pulling together trying to get a result. The fact that we have a lot of French players and some language difficulties has been torn up and made to be something else. There is no problem and we go to the next game.” Press Associationcenter_img Asked if he had endured difficult a week, he said: “Off the back of a difficult result, yes, very. When you are beaten like that at home, it’s never comfortable and not comfortable to deal with. That’s what we have had to deal with this week. “A lot of criticism has come his way, some of it completely unfounded and left-field, as you would expect when you get a result like that. It’s part and parcel of the game. Some of the wildfire that we have had has just been way, way off the mark. But we put a poor performance in on Saturday and we need to put that right. That’s the most important thing.” Much of the criticism has been levelled at Newcastle’s reliance on French players amid suggestions that some members of the overseas contingent do not understand the gravity of the situation into which the club has slipped. However, Pardew insisted that was nonsense. He said: “I just find that accusation insulting, if I am honest. If you think because some of our players are from a foreign country, they are not bothered, it’s just ridiculous. “Of course they are bothered. Our frustrations and our professionalism are on the line. But we have our destiny in our own hands, no-one else, and only we can put it right. We have got a little gap and we need to exploit that and make sure we extend it.” That said, Pardew admitted there have been frank discussions at Newcastle’s training headquarters after a black day in the club’s recent history and no-one has been left in any doubt as to what is required from the remaining three games with just five points separating them from Wigan, who have a game in hand, inside the relegation zone. He said: “Yes, of course, but there have not been words that have been out of turn. If you don’t get feedback from your players, trust me, you are not going to be a manager at any level. You need to have feedback and understand what the problems are that they are experiencing on the pitch and then you have to make sure that you have a game-plan that works.” last_img read more

first_imgNIKOLAI, Alaska – Lance Mackey snatched back the lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, speeding through Ophir on Wednesday as other teams rested. Four-time champions Martin Buser and Jeff King had breezed through the Nikolai checkpoint and cruised to the front while Mackey slept. The two were resting their teams Wednesday in Ophir, near the halfway point of the 1,100-mile race, along with Zack Steer, 33, of Sheep Mountain. Steer has run the race twice with a best finish of 14th place. King, the 2006 champion, took a 41/2-hour rest in Nikolai before making a nearly 100-mile push to Ophir through the checkpoints of McGrath and Takotna. Buser, 48, running in his 24th Iditarod, spent just three minutes in Nikolai on the Kuskokwim River, about 770 miles from the finish line at Nome. He took a 51/2-hour rest in McGrath. Mackey, 36, chased the three other leaders out of Takotna on Wednesday, setting out before dawn for the cabin at Ophir. Mackey is trying to win the 1,100-mile race and follow in the footsteps of his father, Dick, and brother, Rick, who won the race in 1978 and 1983, respectively. “Things are looking good,” Mackey said when he arrived at Nikolai. Mackey, who had not slept since the start of the race in Willow on Sunday, took about seven hours in Nikolai to rest himself and his team. Mackey said his chances of winning had just improved with two top mushers out of the race after getting injured in what is proving to be one of the roughest Iditarods in years. Eleven mushers had dropped out of the race by Wednesday morning, including two top veterans. center_img Four-time champion Doug Swingley, 53, of Lincoln, Mont., was scratched on Monday after taking a spill and getting injured in a stretch of icy trail a few miles before Rainy Pass. Aliy Zirkle, 37, of Two Rivers, who pulled into Nikolai at about the same time as Steer, 33, of Sheep Mountain, said the trail is treacherous this year. “I was lucky. That is the only thing I can say,” she said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! Learning about Term Sheets

first_imgTags:#How To#start audrey watters Even if you plan to bootstrap your company, you should have a good understanding of financing term sheets. That’s what DuckDuckGo founder and Hacker Angel Gabriel Weinberg argues in a blog post today that gives some clear and detailed instructions on where to go to learn more about investor term sheets. As Weinberg points out, most companies will raise money at some point, and it’s better to enter financing situations with a grasp of how things work so that you’re less prone to make mistakes. And as such Weinberg lays out a fairly comprehensive lesson plan for gaining an understanding of the terminology in term sheets. Introduction to Term Sheets:1. Brad Feld’s Term Sheet series2. Venture Hacks’ Term Sheet HacksWeinberg also points to links to sample documents (such as this Series Seed Term Sheet) so you can see what actual term sheets look like as you read these series. Having a concrete example will help you learn the definitions of key terms (“conversion,” “liquidation preference,” and so on).Intermediate Study:Once you understand the terms of the seed documents, Weinberg says to move on to the venture term sheets:1. The Startup Company Lawyer’s definitions and explanations of how the terms differ in across these documents 2. The WSGR Term Sheet GeneratorAdvanced Materials:1. The Startup Company Lawyer’s comparison of Y Combinator and traditional Series A documents2. Chris Dixon’s advice “Don’t shop your term sheet”Weinberg also points to the book Term Sheets & Valuations, but notes that, indeed, most of the necessary information can be found online. Take a week to study the material, in half-hour increments, says Weinberg. And yes, this will be on the final exam. Dalit man’s family to receive compensation from Punjab government

first_imgThe Punjab government on Monday offered to pay compensation of ₹20 lakh and a government job to the deceased Dalit man’s wife and free education for his children. The family of 37-year-old Jagmel Singh who was mercilessly thrashed and forced to drink urine earlier this month ended their protest after the announcement. The family had refused to allow the post mortem of the body till their demand of ₹50 lakh compensation and a government job for the victim’s wife were met. Sandeep Sandhu, political secretary to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, said a compensation of ₹20 lakh including ₹ 8.15 lakh provided under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act will be given to the next of kin. Sandhu, who held a meeting with the victim’s family here, further said that a government job would also be given to a family member of Jagmel. Besides, an Additional Director General of Police-rank officer will conduct a probe to find out if there was any lapse on the part of police in this case and a challan against all the four accused would be submitted within seven days, he said. The government will also bear the education expenditure of his three children till their graduation. He further said that a sum of ₹1.25 lakh would also be given for repair of their house. On October 21, the victim, who was a resident of Changaliwala village in Punjab’s Sangrur district, got into an altercation with one Rinku and some other persons. The dispute was resolved with the intervention of villagers, the police said. Before his death, the victim had told the police that on November 7, Rinku called him to his house where the two talked about the issue. He had alleged that he was then thrashed by four persons with a stick and an iron rod after being tied to a pillar and was forced to drink urine when he asked for water. After the incident, the opposition parties have attacked the Congress government over “barbaric treatment” being meted out to Dalits in the state. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said a “rule of jungle” was prevalent in the state.last_img read more
