The house was designed for a young couple with two young girls on a site located in the suburbs of Nicosia. The hot and arid climate together with the strong winds of the largely unprotected surrounding landscape became critical elements in the morphology of the project. The building tries to exclude the late western sun and the particularly strong west winds in the region but opens up to the south with the cantilevered roof preventing the summer sun but allowing the warm winter sun to heat the space. Clearstory windows enhance its passive cooling and heating capabilities on the ground floor. Save this picture!Courtesy of Simpraxis ArchitectsThe ability to sustain a comfortable environment and maintain the visual and physical connection with the vast landscape is enhanced by a system of glass sliding doors together with a series of custom-made folded and perforated metal panels. These when closed offer privacy and safety during the day but still allow for views to the south.  Their perforations together with the glass sliding doors pushed aside allow for effecting cross-ventilation eliminating the need for mechanical cooling. Save this picture!Courtesy of Simpraxis ArchitectsThe upper floor, which includes the bedrooms and bath areas, shelters from the strong winds and  shades the outdoor courtyard from the western sun after midday. The upper floor box is wrapped in vertical planks of  wooden HPL. These allow for cross ventilation and exclude direct sunlight. The bedrooms and circulation spaces on the upper floor are separated by multiple folding doors so they can operate independently orbe integrated into a single space. East facing windows on the upper floor facilitate the heating of the upper floor spaces during the winter months. Closing the folding doors that separate the bedrooms from the corridor, an intermediate ventilated space is crated that helps to regulate temperatures during the summer months. Save this picture!Courtesy of Simpraxis ArchitectsOn the ground floor the different uses maintain their functional autonomy but at the same time allow the occupants to experience the whole of the space. The family room is separated by the kitchen in the east with cabinetry that allows access from either side, thus separating the food preparation area but not isolating it from the commons spaces. On the west there is an office/guestroom space that can offer privacy or be integrated with the rest of the ground floor when the exterior large sliding doors are open.Save this picture!Courtesy of Simpraxis ArchitectsProject gallerySee allShow lessYading Cliff Building Competition Entry / ELEVArticlesZ House / nred arquitectosSelected Projects Share Save this picture!Courtesy of Simpraxis Architects+ 42 Share House 0405 / Simpraxis Architects 2010 Cypruslast_img read more

first_imgWebsite of the week: www.gonative.co.ukOn 18 Apr 2001 in Personnel Today No,we’re not suggesting a site that organises naturist office awaydays (althoughthere probably is one somewhere on the Web). Go Native is rather for fully cladexecutives looking for somewhere to live while on business in London. The sitehas a database of properties available to rent in the centre of the capital, which includes desirable Mayfair apartments and Soho lofts. It details price, capacity and even decorative style. Wenger keeps Suarez hunt ‘amicable’

first_img The Gunners head into this weekend’s Emirates Cup without a marquee summer signing, despite chief executive Ivan Gazidis having talked up the club’s new “financial firepower” at the end of last season. A move for Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid never materialised as the Argentina striker eventually signed for Napoli, whom Arsenal will play on Saturday afternoon, while the Gunners’ pursuit of wantaway striker Suarez looked to have stalled following a second improved bid of £40million plus £1, which had been intended to trigger a clause that would allow them to discuss terms with the Uruguayan. The Gunners boss said: “We have values that we want our players to respect. No matter where they come from, we will be very touchy on that of course. “This club has built a reputation, not only during my period here but over 127 years, and the values that are very important for this club have to be respected by every player, no matter where he comes from. That will be with every potential signing.” Despite reports Wenger had plenty of players on his radar – from Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar to Swansea defender Ashley Williams and Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, not to mention England frontman Wayne Rooney – so far France under-20 forward Yaya Sanogo is the only confirmed new recruit and that on a free transfer from Auxerre. Wenger, however, insisted that signing could yet prove a shrewd move. “We have signed Sanogo, he has not made the headlines. Why? Because he is not £50m to £100million, but I am quite confident he will make them soon on the pitch, and that for me is the most important,” the Arsenal boss said. “We can still strengthen the squad, there is one month to go. We are at the beginning of August, the transfer window finishes on August 31 (Sept 2). “We are working very hard to strengthen our squad.” Wenger added: “I am confident. You look at many teams around us. Nothing has happened until now. This team with financial potential as well. “At the moment the market hasn’t moved a lot. Apart from Man City, nobody has done anything.” Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has insisted the Anfield club have no intention of selling their key man, who joined up with Brendan Rodgers’ squad on the tour of Australia. Wenger, though, indicated Arsenal remained hopeful of eventually negotiating a deal before the end of the summer transfer window. “I don’t want to speak about Suarez, because that is between Liverpool and Arsenal. We will completely respect what Liverpool wants to do. We want to (sign the player) if it is feasible in an amicable way,” Wenger said. “I am a great believer you have to keep as much confidentiality as possible, which is quite difficult in the modern world. “But we work very hard, not only on the case you name, but on other different cases.” Suarez is currently serving a domestic 10-game ban imposed by the Football Association for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the end of last season. The Uruguay international had previously received an eight-match suspension and £40,000 fine from the FA for racially abusing Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra in December 2011. Wenger indicated, should the striker become an Arsenal player, such future behaviour would not be tolerated. Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal are still keen to sign Luis Suarez but insisted negotiations with Liverpool would remain “amicable”. Press Associationlast_img read more

Lakers trade rumors: Los Angeles’ talks to clear cap space ‘have gone nowhere’

first_img Lakers free agency rumors: Los Angeles is Carmelo Anthony’s ‘most likely destination,’ executives believe “There will be a lot of changes,” Lakers owner Jeanie Buss told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week. “Lakers fans, be patient. We’re going to get there. We’re not going to stop until we’re all proud.”The Lakers reportedly have interest in Bobby Portis, Marcus Morris, Al Horford, Brook Lopez and DeAndre Jordan, as well. They also are the “most likely” destination for Carmelo Anthony. Those three players, who combined to average 10.2 points per game last season in limited playing time, are set to earn around $5 million in 2019-20.The Lakers completed one of the biggest trades in NBA history earlier this month when they acquired Anthony Davis from the Pelicans in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and three first-round picks. Related News Los Angeles will pursue a third star this summer to pair with Davis and LeBron James and it has been linked to Kemba Walker, Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving and D’Angelo Russell. But, if the team makes no more moves, it’s only expected to have around $23 million available this offseason and will not be able to offer a max contract. NBA free agency rumors: Lakers rooting for Kyrie Irving to sign with Nets The Lakers continue to look to clear salary space.Los Angeles has reportedly been shopping the contracts of reserves Mo Wagner, Jemerrio Jones and Isaac Bonga to other teams. Those talks, however, have gone “nowhere” as the team has “limited ability to sweeten a deal with draft picks,” according to a report from Sports Illustrated, which cites unidentified league sources. Charles Barkley thinks Warriors will struggle to make NBA playoffs

first_img“I think they’re gonna struggle to make the playoffs without Klay,” Barkley said (via NBC Sports). “I think that’s the one thing they’re gonna miss the most, even more than KD.” Barkley believes the Western Conference has changed enough to keep the six-time NBA champions out of the playoffs next season. After a busy offseason, the Lakers acquired Anthony Davis through a trade with the Pelicans, and the Clippers landed Kawhi Leonard in free agency.  Related News Lonzo Ball on being traded from Lakers to Pelicans: ‘I was excited’ “The West, there’s no bad teams in the West,” Barkley added. “There are no bad teams. Obviously, everybody’s talking about the Lakers and the Clippers, I haven’t even mentioned Denver, the Spurs, Dallas got a lot better, New Orleans got a lot better.”This is unbelievable how hard the West is.” Barkley did give Stephen Curry credit for leading the Warriors, but he doesn’t believe it’ll be enough to keep the Golden State in the playoff race.”Steph’s gonna be Steph. He’s one of the best basketball players in the world,” Barkley said. “I just don’t think they have enough without Klay.” The Warriors finished last season first in the West with a 57-25 record. They made it to the NBA Finals, but were eliminated by the Raptors as Toronto won its first title in franchise history. Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo on roster changes around the NBA: ‘It’s insane’ Anthony Davis sidesteps question on long-term future with Lakers Charles Barkley isn’t confident about the Warriors’ playoff chances next season. The Warriors undoubtedly will look different after losing Kevin Durant in free agency to the Nets, and star Klay Thompson likely will be sidelined next season after tearing his ACL. last_img read more
