A FORMER Donegal taxi driver has been sent to prison for possessing child pornography.David Martin (52), now of 78 Sylvan Park, Letterkenny has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended. Martin was residing at 11 St Jude’s Court, Lifford when Gardaí were alerted by the Online Child Exploitation Unit to someone using an IP address associated with that house posting child pornography images on Twitter.Gardaí searched the premises on October 6, 2016 and seized a Zeus Storm Desktop computer which contained six videos, with a combined duration of almost two hours, showing teen and pre-teen boys and girls engaged in sexual activity with adults. Martin admitted downloading, viewing and possessing the images and also of posting images on Twitter, which brought the matter to a head. The videos were being described as Category 1, the most serious category. Sentencing at Letterkenny Circuit Court, Judge John Aylmer said that Martin, who will be on the sex offenders register, had set up ’sophisticated anti-forensic software’ on the device Martin had told officers that he often used search engines for the dark web. “While this is a single count, evidence establishes that he was engaged in this type of activity since 2013,” Judge Aylmer said,“It is clear that this material represents only his harvest on this date.”Barrister for Martin, Mr Peter Nolan BL, said his client’s marriage was over and the marital home had been sold. Mr Nolan said that Martin’s extensive heart issues made him unsuitable for community service.Judge John Aylmer said his starting point for sentencing was a two-and-a-half-year prison term. There was no suggestion, he said, that Martin was immediately proximate to the abuse or swapping the material for commercial gain.Described as a low-risk of reoffending, Martin claimed to have been sexually abused as a child and has attended 15 psychotherapy sessions in Dublin. Judge Aylmer imposed a sentence of two and a half years in prison and suspended the final 12 months. Martin entered into a €100 bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for 12 months subsequent to his release.Judge Aylmer granted a destruction order on the seized property.Former Donegal taxi driver jailed for having child pornography was last modified: November 10th, 2019 by Chris McNultyShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:David MartinJudge John AylmerletterkennyLetterkenny Circuit CourtLiffordPeter Nolan BL
Don’t despise small things. Miniature plants and animals can pack some amazing punch and technology, as shown in two recent findings.Plant explosion: Peat moss. That’s the filler in our indoor plant soil and Live Science reported that its pots shoot its spores out at 89 miles per hour, producing accelerations of 36,000 G’s. Some spore clouds reach 80 times the height of the spore capsule before slowing down from air resistance. The tiny plant produces a vortex ring like a smoke ring, an “extremely efficient way for a material to move through space.” Because of its success at spreading its spores, Sphagnum moss covers about 1% of earth’s land surface – an area more than twice the size of Texas. Joan Edwards [Williams College], who along with Johan L. van Leeuwen [Pomona College] published their findings in Science, said, “Sphagnum’s body is very simple, and yet it’s doing this very complicated thing.” Pressure builds up in the tiny capsule like a pressurized super soaker squirt gun, then pop! goes the efficiently-designed cloud of spores. “It’s really special,” she said. “Other mosses do exciting things, but not this exciting.”Animal tractor: We’ve all seen caterpillars crawl, with waves of motion proceeding from back to front. Scientists at Tufts University found something else, reported Science Daily: the insides move to a different drummer than the outsides. “They found that the gut – essentially a tube suspended at the rear and head of the caterpillar and decoupled from the body wall – moved nearly a full step in advance of the surrounding structures,” the article said. “In contrast, gut movement was ‘in step’ with motion of the head and rear.” This “crazy crawl,” Live Science said, is unlike any other motion seen in the animal kingdom: “their guts slide forward before the rest of their body does.” It took visible and X-ray videos to see the process. Live Science said the researchers wanted to know if this motion provides an advantage; Science Daily wondered if it provides an evolutionary advantage: “More research is needed to determine if this phenomenon gives caterpillars an evolutionary advantage, in the same way that synchronizing breathing and tissue movements benefits running vertebrates, or arm swinging by walking humans increases stability and reduces metabolic costs.” That sentence begs the question that advantageous traits evolved. Regardless of how the caterpillar came up with its crazy crawl, the scientists are eager to imitate it. They envision a new kind of soft-bodied robot that might use the same inside-first, outside last propulsion mechanism. “Understanding this novel motion system may help efforts to design soft-bodied robots,” said Barry Trimmer of Tufts University. It goes without saying that the tractors brand-named “Caterpillar” have not yet achieved the feat of their namesake. For additional small wonders of propulsion, see the entries about water striders (08/07/2003), the froghopper (08/01/2003), plant drill bits (05/11/2007), maple helicopters (10/21/2009) and other “Amazing Facts” chain links. We apologize for upsetting your digestion with the evolutionary tale. Biologists need to understand that all advantages are not evolutionary advantages. They might be designed advantages. Unless they are prepared to describe in detail the sequence of inherited mistakes that led to the extraordinary functions, they should not speak in such terms. How many wonders remain to be found in the weeds at your feet, the insects flying in your yard, and the tiny animals in plankton at the beach, or unseen in the soil? Today, the company is launching its service by way of a mobile application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The free Micello application now delivers over 250 maps of shopping malls across the U.S. with more being daily. At launch time, the majority of those maps are within the San Francisco Bay area, but the company promised at DEMO that they would have over 5000 places mapped across the country by the end of 2010. However, for those in the supported locales, Micello’s free app is going to be a must-have. The maps created by the company are geo-coded to the real world, allowing you to see their exact location as pins on a map in relation to other area landmarks and infrastructure like roads and parking lots. You can search for a particular indoor map using the included search box (for example, “IKEA”) or, once the map is loaded, search within the app for a particular section (for example, in IKEA you could search for “desks”). Governers want more money to be sunk for refurbishing their highmaintenance palatial abodes. Struck hard by inflation, the offices of 27 governors have put in demands with the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) to double the expenditure budget for the stately British-era Raj Bhavans. In response to a right to information (RTI) application filed by Mail Today, the MHA has revealed that the revision of expenditure ceilings for Raj Bhavans is now under the “active consideration” of the government. The MHA has provided 108 pages of documents under the RTI, including letters received by the MHA from the offices of the governors across India. To satisfy the demands made in these letters, the ministry will need to double its total existing annual expenditure ceiling of Rs 12.5 crore to nearly Rs 25 crore for all Raj Bhavans.Among all the Raj Bhavans, Maharashtra has cited inflation to seek the fattest increase. It wants the annual expenditure ceiling to be tripled from Rs1.5. crore to Rs 4.6 crore. If its plea is accepted, the Raj Bhavan in Maharashtra will be the costliest to maintain in the country along with the Tamil Nadu governor’s house which has asked for a similar hike. The increase in prices of basic food commodities and petrol, more expensive air travel as well as the steep maintenance cost of the sprawling lawns are the three reasons given by the Rajasthan Raj Bhavan for an increase of over 200% in its expenditure budget. While it has sought a budget allocation of Rs 1.13 crore from the Centre, the governor’s houses in Gujarat and Karnataka are looking for a 150% hike to take their expenditure ceiling to Rs 1.07 crore and Rs 1.12 crore, respectively. The Raj Bhavan in Gujarat has even suggested that the MHA do away with ceilings altogether.advertisement”Having regard to the position of governor as the constitutional head of the state, it may be appropriate for the Centre to leave the matter of propriety of expenditure to his prudent judgment… Ceilings serve as restricting norms?affecting the governors’ convenience and dignity in performing his duties,” the letter by the Gujarat Raj Bhavan to the MHA stated. The MHA began fixing expenditure ceilings for Raj Bhavans since 1987. The amount is charged from the consolidated fund of the respective state governments. The MHA last revised this ceiling in 2006. The governor’s house of Sikkim is the only one not to ask for a raise. The Maharashtra Raj Bhavan has written to the MHA that while the emoluments of a governor have seen a 2000% increase since 1987 and that of a clerk have gone up by 778% in the same period, the hike in expenditure ceiling for the Raj Bhavans has been merely 79%.”The prices of commodities and services such as such as the Mumbai-Delhi airfare, electricity, petrol, water, foodstuff, telephone services, soil and manure have increased manifold,” the letter to the MHA by the Maharashtra governor’s secretary stated. Why states need more allocation?- Renewal of furnishings – Hospitality expenses for official guests – Entertainment expenses for patronising art, culture and music – Office expenses of the Raj Bhavan – Maintenance & repair of furnishings – Contract allowance for stationery, laundry, sports, maintenance of vehicles – Tour expenses for governor’s travel by air, road or rail – Maintenance of gardens and lawns
Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said the state government will set up Tajpur Port on its own. Banerjee said for the last five years, she had negotiated with the Centre to set up the port but in vain.Inaugurating the Dighashree Bangla International Convention Centre, she maintained: “Nitin Gadkari had told me that the Centre would set up the port if the state government was ready to give them 74 percent share. We had agreed and requested the Centre to construct an iron bridge at Gangasagar. We have waited for five years and now we have decided to set up the port on our own. It will generate new employment.” Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari PujaState ministers Firhad Hakim, Indranil Sen, Suvendu Adhikari were present at the inaugural function along with Sishir Adhikari, Dibyendu Adhikari and Dipak Adhikari (MPs) and industrialists Rudra Chatterjee and Mayank Jalan. Puri is a small place but they (Odisha government) could not build it the manner we have developed Digha. I have a plan to build a similar Jagannath temple here in Digha. There is a small Jagannath ghat here and I had asked the District Magistrate to renovate and upgrade it. We will also build Masjid and Church here… This will bring in more tourists here,” she said. The government also has plans to bring in seaplanes to augment tourist footfall in Digha. The 7 km long stretch along the beach will also be beautified and opened to the public shortly.”
Post a comment Tags SpaceX’s Crew Dragon NASA/SpaceX SpaceX continues to progress in its efforts to bring back human flight travel, releasing a new video this week highlighting its Crew Dragon parachute tests. The roughly two-and-a-half-minute video, which features the parachutes deploying in a variety of conditions and altitudes, closes with the tag “SpaceX is returning human spaceflight capabilities with one of the safest, most advanced systems ever built.” The video highlighting its landing capabilities comes after a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule unexpectedly exploded during a ground test at Cape Canaveral in Florida on April 20 due to a leak in the spacecraft’s pressurization system. Similar to Boeing’s Starliner, the Crew Dragon is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew program that aims to return to using US-built craft to deliver astronauts to space. Recent missions have outsourced transport to Russian spacecraft since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011. It’s not yet known when SpaceX will launch the next Crew Dragon flight, named Demo-2, but you can watch the parachute tests below. 0 Sci-Tech CNET’s Eric Mack contributed to this story. The Union Budget for 2017-2018 is out and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been widely applauded for the changes brought into effect on Wednesday, February 1. IBTimes India has covered the budget allocations for various sectors, including railways, real estate, defence, income tax, agriculture, rural development, Fintech and the rest.Read: Sector-wise allocation in the Budget 2017-2018The bold decisions taken by Jaitley in the latest budget are widely welcomed by all the sectors. The latest budget has received mixed reactions from the technology companies, most of them applauding the minister’s announcements. Here are some of the major tech company responses to the Union Budget 2017-2018:MediaTek”We were expecting Financial Budget 2017 to offer incentives to start inflow towards design led manufacturing in place of assembly led manufacturing ecosystem, but it seems government not yet convinced towards adopting multiple layered incentives for localization while increasing the duties on CBU (Completely built Units), overall based on the information available from the budget the impact of the policies seems to be neutral for mobile/tablet industry, at best. There has been a 2% increase in duties levied on import of PCBA in India, which still will reflect only on one part of the manufacturing cycle with focus on assembly of mobile handsets. On the other hand, providing attractive incentives for localization of design and R&D capabilities would have bolstered the ‘Make in India’ initiative, and driven more handset makers to introduce design led manufacturing in India,” Kuldeep Malik, Country Head – Corporate Sales International, MediaTek India, saidShopClues”Budget was overall a populist budget; a move in the right direction but short of expectations. Push for Digital transformation & financial inclusion is applauded but the government has deployed lot more sticks rather than carrots too to push the “less-cash” agenda.I would have expected zero TDR for small value digital transitions. Investments in infrastructure, focus on Bharat & employment guarantee & women empowerment, political trans is welcome. Corporate tax break for SMES is very nice, and much awaited, it is important that government recognizes SMES to be the engine of India’s GDP growth. Incentive for Startup fell short of expectations. There is not much clarity around FDI, FIPB so let’s see how it pans out in coming days,” Sanjay Sethi, CEO & Co-founder of Shopclues, said.Paytm”It is a digital economy budget. Government has pushed the digital theme in every area of the budget. Every person from small shops to consumers is pushed towards the digital economy. Tax benefits, incentives to use digital payments and extending loans based on a digital footprint will create a larger merchant ecosystem for digital payments. Incentives for labour intensive sectors including housing, farming and dairy will help SMEs to create new jobs. Focus and attention to bank NPAs, as well as increasing bank capitalisation is great step towards strengthening the financial system of the country. Finally, the income tax rate changes will encourage more people to report their incomes and create a larger tax net for the country. Overall, it is a great budget that will encourage people to move to the formal economy and derive benefits,” Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Founder & CEO of Paytm, said.Opera”This year’s Union budget is game changing and progressive. Demonetization is leading Indians to shift towards a Digital India. The cashback scheme and referral bonus to promote the usage of BHIM app will make citizens more comfortable with mobile wallets. This is extremely encouraging for company operating in internet space like us because no of Indians coming online will increase exponentially. Our country is becoming the victim of hackers, the proposal of a dedicated Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) for the financial sector is a beneficial move as it would help in keeping transactions safe and secure. Moreover, the extension of tax holiday from existing 5 years to 7 years will cheer up the start-up ecosystem. We wish the finance minister a great luck to implement all the progressive reforms,” Sunil Kamath, Vice President – South Asia & Southeast Asia at Opera, said.Sennheiser Electronics India”The Union Budget 2017-18 significantly focuses on bringing socio economic development and digitalization in the country while emphasizing on the nine key initiatives for economic reforms — Farmers and rural population, youth education and job opportunities, poor and underprivileged, infrastructure, financial sector, digital economy, public service, prudent fiscal management and tax administration. With increase in Foreign Direct Investment and Foreign Exchange reserve, India has now emerged as one of the fastest growing economy with an accelerated growth in 2016-2017.It is also quite encouraging to see that investment on infrastructure has been given priority at today’s budget while focusing on the GDP growth,” Vinu Cheriyan CFO & Director Operations at Sennheiser, said.itel Mobile”The Union Budget-2017 carries significant prospects for manufacturing brands. The FM has included provisions meant to boost electronic manufacturing by promoting MSIPS and EDF. Such policies would further receive funds worth 745 crores in FY18, hence, promoting indigenous manufacturers and attracting innovation and technology prowess engineered by foreign countries. And while the manufacturing sector celebrates policy changes, we further appreciate the streamlined delivery of these products, via the GST bill. These announcements are further in sync with the overall emphasis on transitioning India into a digital economy, empowered with fast internet access, cyber-security and access to smartphones. It is heartening to see the union budget for FY18 support the right to progress by shifting the focus back on to rural economy and agriculture; which truly resonates with our brand proposition. The provisions put forth in the budget are going to improve the buying capacity, digital lifestyles and affluence of the rural India and we at itel, welcome these changes and look forward to the promising year ahead,” Sudhir Kumar, CEO of itel Mobile, said.nexGTv”I welcome the budget and appreciate the clear commitment shown by the Government towards fueling the growth of digital adaptation by focusing on underlying infrastructure. This is reflected in the availability of more spectrums and 10k crore worth of budget allocation for fiber optic laying beyond the already laid 155000 km. The availability of bandwidth will help Indians adapt to the digital lifestyle and thus, will help in the growth of the entire ecosystem. Additionally, the rebate in tax for people, especially the ones at the bottom of the pyramid will increase their in-hand disposable income a part which will also be spent on mobility, data, and entertainment, further working for the benefit of the OTT players,” Abhesh Verma, COO of nexGTV, said.Roposo”The government’s move to enable startups, incorporated after 31 March 2016, avail of a three-year tax holiday in their first seven years is quite commendable. We also welcome the new relaxations provided in terms of carrying forward the losses. The government’s efforts to digitise India and promote digital payments should go a long way in boosting the country’s economic growth. However, the 5% corporate tax reduction is not relevant to most startups that have not yet begun generating as much revenue. Government should now start thinking about how to reduce startups’ real cost in the early years. In my opinion, income tax slabs should be made completely flat. Tax rates should not increase with increasing income,” Mayank Bhangadia, CEO and co-founder of Roposo, said.iValue InfoSolutions”We will call it a balanced budget, which will drive growth with prudence and addressing needs of the poor. The major thrust on Capex growth of 25% should drive demand. The focus on infrastructure and rural areas are welcoming. We did not hear much on cyber security with a greater push on the digital transaction, but for the creation of CERT. We still think a lot more focus is required on this front,” Sriram S, co-founder and Director at iValue InfoSolutions, said.Array Networks”I am overall happy with the budget, the increased focus on cashless economy and move towards digitization is very much appreciable. I will call it a forward looking budget with the balanced Tax soaps, IT rebates, focus on rural areas and SME development. Also, the reduction in tax for companies with less than Rs. 50 crore turnover, which will now be placed at 25% is a big win for MSME sector and around 96% of the companies will be benefitted by this major announcement,” Shibu Paul, Regional Director (IN , GCC & SEA ) at Array Networks, said.CrediHealth”The Union Budget 2017 has taken a step towards making healthcare not just affordable but structurally robust as well. However, technology could prove to be a disruptive factor in assuring that the healthcare reaches out to those who have been hitherto isolated from it. But, unfortunately the budget has completely overlooked the health-tech startups which are changing the landscape of healthcare industry in India. With a focus on transparency and reach, they have been deprived of an opportunity to make an dent in healthcare ecosystem,” Ravi Virmani, MD & Founder of CrediHealth, said.Aeris”Overall a very positive budget. Reduction of corporate tax rates from 30% to 25% for MSME firms will definitely encourage investors and corporates. Some of the steps taken will definitely increase foreign direct investment and lead to employment generation which will be good for country,” Rishi Bhatnagar, President at Aeris, said.
