Developments in assistive technology over the next

first_imgDevelopments in assistive technology over the next few years have the potential to be “truly, truly transformatory” for disabled people, a fringe event at the Conservative party conference heard this week.Neil Heslop, chief executive of the disability charity Leonard Cheshire, who uses assistive technology himself, said that technology was “a massive force for good, if appropriately leveraged”.But he added: “As the economy becomes increasingly digitised, there are risks and dangers for people with disability missing out on those opportunities.”He said that everybody working in technology recognised that it was not perfect and “still has a very, very long way to go” in terms of accessibility.But he said that “the core thesis is that we are as a society at an inflection point and what we do and don’t do now and in a small number of years actually has the potential to be truly, truly transformatory”.The fringe event was hosted by Leonard Cheshire and the technology giant Microsoft.Hector Minto (pictured, second from right), “accessibility evangelist” for Microsoft, said that technology was “reaching further into society than it ever has before”, including the billion disabled people on the planet.He said: “We cannot design society digitally without purposefully including people with disability.“Otherwise we miss the one in seven [people who are disabled], and the price will be high.”Minto said that “every other industrial revolution the world has encountered” had paid a price for having to “add disability later”.He said there was now an opportunity to “wire in accessibility” into what was being done and he pointed to a free plug-in for the widely-available Microsoft PowerPoint software that he then revealed had been producing live subtitles for the meeting.Minto said Microsoft was increasing the number of disabled people it employed because it needed to include them “in our workplace, in our product groups, in our design teams”.And he said the company was also asking its corporate customers around the world to “unlock” the assistive technology that was already built into Microsoft software.Steve Tyler (pictured, far left), director of assistive technology for Leonard Cheshire, told the meeting that support with technology was often available when disabled people were in education or in work.But he said: “What about before you’re in work? That’s the time when you need to engage with technology.“Virtually every job that we do today has an element of technology, and that is increasing as time goes on.“So for me, a key part of what we need to do is invent a new mechanism that allows funding prior to work to engage people in technology and engage them in the learning and training and the use of it.”Hannah Rose (pictured, far right) told the meeting how assistive technology – including the use of speech recognition software, which allows her to dictate into her computer – had helped her pass her GCSEs, A-levels and a degree, after becoming disabled as a teenager.She later secured a job as a vetting officer with Cheshire police, following a work trial, where she has now worked for 10 years.She said: “It gives me that independence to carry out a fulfilling job, like I am serving a purpose, like everybody else in that office.“None of this would have been possible without having that assistive technology.“Without work I would be lost. It’s great to be able to contribute to society like any other person, and without the access to assistive technology this wouldn’t be possible.”The meeting also discussed the wider issue of disability employment.Dave Bracher, campaigns manager for Spinal Injuries Association, said: “There has to be a way of getting the message out there that employers who are not employing disabled people are really missing a trick, because of the skills and qualities that those people bring to the party.“I am not saying that I am any more special than anybody else in the room as an employee but what I am saying is that my experience of spinal cord injury, the year I spent in rehab, the three weeks I spent with locked-in syndrome, communicating by blinking… that gives me skills and qualities that any employer should be looking for.”Sarah Newton (pictured, second from left), minister for disabled people, told the meeting: “It isn’t acceptable that half of people with disabilities who want to work and could work are not in work. That is a lost talent pool for the whole nation.“There’s a lot of talk at this conference and the last conference about post-Brexit Britain and the future of our country after Brexit and one thing for sure is that we need to make sure that we are using all the talents in our nation going forward, and that must mean enabling more of those people to get into work and to thrive in work.”Heslop (pictured, centre) said: “If any large-scale organisation does not have a representative number of people with disabilities in its workforce [which he said was about 19 per cent] and frighteningly few organisations achieve that today, anyone who doesn’t should be dissatisfied and should be committing themselves to creating an inclusive workplace.”He added: “Anyone in a leadership position has to accept [that], and this is true of large charities like ours.“I’m completely dissatisfied with the proportion of disabled people we employ, and we are taking steps to get much better.”Tyler said there was “scary but increasing evidence” that employers were looking at people’s social media profiles at the earliest stages of recruitment and if they saw that those people were disabled they “are rejected before they even get in the door”.He said: “We need to find ways through technology of highlighting/flagging/preventing that kind of stuff from happening.” A note from the editor:Please consider making a voluntary financial contribution to support the work of DNS and allow it to continue producing independent, carefully-researched news stories that focus on the lives and rights of disabled people and their user-led organisations. first_imgLEON Pryce has thanked the fans for their support after he made his return from injury on Friday.The 29-year-old half back took to the field 20 minutes before the end of the match to end a long spell out on the sidelines.Pryce has suffered from a bulging neck disk and then a serious groin tear in the last 12 months.“It was good to be back and it was a massive buzz when I came on to the field,” he said. “It was one of the best feelings of my career. When I was waiting to get back on to the field, you could feel the anticipation in the air from myself and the crowd. It was a nice feeling and something I will never forget. The fans were awesome.“I was very nervous as it was like making my debut again. But in the end it was well worth it and it gave me a massive buzz.“The opening ten minutes were a bit tough, but it was a case of me getting back into it. It made me appreciate being able to play as the last 12 months have been hard.“I missed a lot of big games last season but this year, if I get a good run of games and stay fit, I’ll be ready for them.“But I know I have some work to do. It’s up to Royce really, but I think I will be off the bench for the next few weeks to build myself up.”Pryce has made 330 games in his career to date but admits the last 12 months have made him appreciate the game more.“I have played Super League since I was 16 and with the other competitions and internationals you can play none stop. You can get sick of playing. first_imgMARC Sneyd’s drop goal broke Saints hearts as Hull FC snatched a 17-16 win at Langtree Park.The scrum half kicked the one pointer moments after an effort from Theo Fages drifted just wide.It was harsh on Keiron Cunningham’s side who threw everything they had at their visitors.Indeed, both Lee Radford and Saints’ head coach agreed that a draw would have been the right result.Yet, it was that touch of magic from Sneyd’s boot that sealed the deal.Like Easter Monday, Saints began well.An early penalty put them on the front foot and Fages took full advantage by sliding a nice grubber for Joe Greenwood to put down.Walsh adding the extras.Saints continued to pile on the pressure and would have counted themselves unlucky not to increase the lead.Luke Walsh’s high ball was taken in the in-goal area in the 10th minute and then some quick play to the left saw Jordan Turner’s pass just go forward.Hull progressed into Saints’ half on a rare foray before the 20 minute mark and won a repeat set when Jon Wilkin was unlucky to have been called back for a knock on.Fonda went close – downed by Dominique Peyroux – but Houghton latched on to a great kick to level the scores up.Hull were on the up and Saints had to withstand a barrage of pressure before they struck next … and it came slightly against the play on their next attacking set.On the last Walsh went down the right hand side and looked set to kick to the right corner.But he reversed his effort to the left for Turner to take took advantage of the bouncing ball.He found Fages who threw a fine cut out pass for Dawson to cross in the corner.Owens converted from the touchline and seconds later Saints increased the lead once more.After a strong run from Peyroux it was swept left into the hands of Turner who bulldozed over for his second of the year.Hull are a different prospect this season though and they struck back just before half time.Saints gave a penalty away on their visitor’s twenty and from there Curtis Naughton polished off a fine move.Saints should have stretched their lead at half time though with the boot – but Owens, who had slotted one off the touchline earlier, missed from to the right of the posts after Luke Walsh was hit with a high shot.The second half was almost a complete flip of the first – Hull starting the better.McDonnell made a crucial tackle on Shaul within the first minute before James Roby knocked it dead for a drop out five minutes later.And on 54 minutes Saints defended back to back sets from two penalties and then backstopped yet another from a high shot.That defence was always going to take its toll though and Kirk Yeaman made the best use of some lethargic tackling to collect an offload and scamper over.Sneyd tagging on the two to bring it level.Saints were pulled for obstruction on their first significant attacking set of the half – on 63 minutes – and then Dawson made an important tackle on Steve Michaels.The home side then won a drop out with 10 minutes to go when Luke Thompson chased down a Jon Wilkin kick.But Saints couldn’t make the best of it – and Fages was wide with a drop goal on 75 minutes.Sneyd wasn’t with his though and despite a frantic effort the Saints couldn’t find a way back.Match Summary:Saints:Tries: Greenwood, DawsonGoals: Walsh (1 from 1), Owens (1 from 3)Hull FC:Tries: Houghton, Naughton, YeamanGoals: Sneyd (2 from 3)Drop: SneydPenalties:Saints: 6Hull FC: 6HT: 16-10FT: 16-17REF: James ChildATT: 10,242Teams:Saints: 23. first_imgWHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Whiteville City Schools Superintendent Kenny Garland stopped by Good Morning Carolina on Monday to discuss consolidation, school safety and more.One of the big topics in Columbus County is consolidation. On Friday, we heard from Columbus County Schools Superintendent Alan Faulk about why their district thinks it may be a good idea. Superintendent Kenny Garland explained why Whiteville City Schools do not agree. Garland said he believes that a merger would create a significant loss of state and federal funding. He says county commissioners want the districts to participate in a study on the financial, educational and emotional impact of merging Columbus County and Whiteville City Schools.- Advertisement – Garland also addressed Friday’s school shooting in Texas. “One of the things that I think of each time is if that were our campus, what could we do?” Garland said. “What can we do to prevent such acts of violence?”He explained that administrators are asked to review their safety plans and try to learn from what happened. When it comes to adding metal detectors to schools, Garland said the school district should look at a variety of things in regards to student safety. In a press release, it stated that to do so would be to allow all citizens of the EU to “be given an opportunity to express their views, effectively and at the right time”. The KA put in a proposal on the 5th of November 2018, highlighting the need for public participation in the preparation of a Cost-Benefit Analysis for projects which would be funded by the European Union. According to the KA, the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani stated that the European Parliament shares this concern. Samsung Puts An 8Core Processor Into Its New Galaxy A7 Smartphone

first_imgShareCONTACT: Jade BoydPHONE: 713-348-6778E-MAIL: jadeboyd@rice.eduWhat goes down, must come up: Earth’s leaky mantleGeoscientists offer new model for degassing of Earth’s mantleA new analysis of the processes that constantly stir the Earth’s deep mantle is helping to explain how the mantle holds onto a portion of ancient noble gases that were trapped during the Earth’s formation.The research, which appears this week in the journal Nature, takes aim at a question that has vexed geoscientists for years: how to reconcile leading theories about the convection of Earth’s mantle with observations of ancient noble gases in volcanic rocks. Researchers at Rice University and Harvard University developed a new model to explain how noble gases — elements like helium, neon and argon — are lost from the Earth’s interior during mantle convection.“Most existing models find that convection should have left the mantle extensively depleted in ancient noble gases, unless part or all of the lower mantle has been somehow isolated,” said study co-author Helge Gonnermann, assistant professor of Earth science at Rice. “We set out to see if there was a mechanism that could both preserve ancient noble gases in the lower mantle and still be consistent with the existing framework for whole mantle convection.”On human timescales, the Earth’s surface seems to change very little. But geoscientists know the planet’s topmost layer, or lithosphere, is actually a series of interlocking tectonic plates that are in constant motion. When plates collide, mountain ranges form, and when they pull apart, as happens deep beneath the oceans, new crust forms by partial melting of the uppermost mantle. Plates also slide one beneath another in a process known as subduction, and seismologists discovered about 15 years ago that some subducted plates plunge deep into the Earth. In some cases, they even sink across the mantle transition zone, a layer about 660 kilometers deep that divides the Earth’s upper and lower mantle.“This was a real problem because the prevailing view in geoscience was that only the upper mantle was involved in this plate tectonic recycling process,” Gonnermann said. “One reason people believed this was because there appear to be relatively high concentrations of ancient noble gases in ocean island basalts, volcanic rocks found at volcanic island chains, such as Hawaii.”One of these ancient noble gases is helium-3, an isotope of helium that isn’t created by any process inside the Earth. Consequently, scientists know that virtually all the helium-3 found on Earth is left over from the planet’s formation. Helium-3 tends to get released from the mantle when it rises to form new crust. As the mantle cycles, from mantle to ocean crust and back to mantle again, geochemists expect to see less and less helium-3. While this is what’s observed in most basalt rocks formed from lavas erupting at mid-ocean ridges, there are exceptions, particularly in basalt rocks from Hawaii and other volcanic ocean island chains.Ocean island chains are thought to form when mantle plumes rise from the lowermost mantle to the Earth’s surface, where the mantle undergoes partial melting to produce basalt magma.“The presence of ancient noble gases in these basalts implies that they have remained locked inside the lower mantle since the Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago,” Gonnermann said. “In contrast, most of these ancient noble gases appear to have leaked out of the upper mantle, because the plate tectonic recycling process allows noble gases to escape with the basalt magma as it continuously forms new ocean crust at mid-ocean ridges.”In the new study, Gonnermann and longtime collaborator Sujoy Mukhopadhyay, a Harvard geochemist, developed a model that could reconcile convection involving the lower mantle with the helium-3 measurements found in ocean island basalts.The model suggests that both the upper and lower mantle are involved in convection, but it affects them in different ways. Whereas the upper mantle has been extensively degassed through repeated tectonic cycling, the lower mantle has been recycling approximately once during the past 4.5 billion years.Continuous mixing of subducted plates into the lower mantle has been diluting the concentrations of ancient noble gases there. Instead of extracting ancient noble gases at their original concentrations, progressively smaller amounts are extracted at any given rate of tectonic cycling. Consequently, about 40 percent of the ancient helium-3 can still be present in the lower mantle, even though it may have undergone one complete tectonic cycling over the past 4.5 billion years.“Contrary to the conventional view that tectonic cycling of the lower mantle should result in extensive mixing between the lower and upper mantle, thereby erasing any differences in helium-3, we find that much of the tectonic cycling of the lower mantle essentially bypasses the upper mantle,” Mukhopadhyay said. “What goes down must come up: Slabs that subduct and mix into the lower mantle are balanced by mantle plumes, rich in helium-3, which rise from the lower mantle to the Earth’s surface without mixing significantly as they traverse the upper mantle.”The research is supported by the National Science Foundation and the University of Hawaii. Simmons Family Foundation Collaborative Research Fund. The $3 million initiative to discover new ways to diagnose and treat diseases supports collaboration among researchers at Rice University, Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI). Four projects chosen from 33 proposals involving 114 Rice, Texas Children’s Hospital and TMHRI scientists have been awarded one-year seed grants of $143,500. Successful initial findings will ideally lead the researchers to pursue further funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other organizations. The awards were announced today in a ceremony at the Houston offices of SCF Partners.The fund was formed to promote novel solutions to difficult medical problems through the combined expertise of Texas Medical Center scientists, engineers and physicians who might not otherwise collaborate.“Our family was incredibly pleased to witness the superb research that was conducted by the recipients during the first round of grant research,” said L.E. Simmons of last year’s awards, which funded initiatives to address breast and childhood cancers, hearing loss and identification of people at risk for tuberculosis. “Even more important is the collaboration that took place on both an institutional and individual level at these three institutions. “We were equally pleased to see that the level of quality of the proposals continued in the competition this second year and are excited to see the progress this year’s recipients will make on these scientific research and collaborative endeavors.”New way to fight fluJianpeng Ma, who holds a joint appointment as a professor in bioengineering at Rice and professor at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), and Pedro Piedra, an infectious disease specialist at Texas Children’s Hospital and a professor in BCM’s Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology, will use advanced computer modeling to analyze A/H3N2, an increasingly common strain of flu virus that kills thousands in the United States each year. By better understanding H3N2’s antigenic drift – a viral strategy for avoiding the human immune system – they hope to identify mutations that have the potential to cause an epidemic. Their ultimate goal is a more efficient way to design flu vaccines.Their work, they wrote, “is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the fields of influenza and other pathogens, such as HIV.” Ma and his colleagues recently published a paper that used a similar technique to find a weakness in the H1N1 “swine flu” virus that could lead to more effective vaccines.Infant hearts repairs that lastBirth defects are the No. 1 cause of infant deaths in the United States, and heart-related defects are the most common reason. Because these defects can frequently be identified in the womb, surgeons are often able to apply plastic patches to infant hearts shortly after birth.But such patches are only a quick fix, because they don’t grow with the child and can cause problems as time goes on. Jeffrey Jacot, an assistant professor in bioengineering at Rice who holds a joint appointment at Texas Children’s Hospital, proposes using stem cells from the mother’s amniotic fluid to grow a heart patch that will bind tightly to and grow with the child’s own heart. The tissue, which could be grown once a fetus is diagnosed with a heart defect, would be genetically identical to the child and could be implanted shortly after birth. Jacot wrote that such patches would “eventually degrade and become entirely replaced by cell-generated heart tissue.” He’ll draw on the experience of a team of co-principal investigators and collaborators that includes Jane Grande-Allen, a Rice associate professor in bioengineering; Jennifer West, Rice’s Isabel C. Cameron Professor, department chair for Bioengineering and a professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering; Anthony Johnson, a physician at Texas Children’s Fetal Center; Kenneth Moise, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at BCM and also a member of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center; and Charles Fraser, chief of congenital heart surgery and cardiac surgeon in-charge at Texas Children’s Hospital.Helping immune system battle brain tumorsStephen Gottschalk and Yvonne Kew want to set a patient’s own immune system to work against glioblastoma multiforme, the most common form of brain tumor. Recent studies show such tumors often incorporate a virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV). The researchers hope to grow CMV-specific T-cells – the white blood cells that play a central role in humans’ immune system – from glioblastoma patients for future clinical studies. If they successfully isolate the cells, they will pursue funds for a clinical study to test CMV-specific T-cells in glioblastoma patients.Gottschalk is an associate professor in pediatrics and immunology at Texas Children’s Cancer Center and an assistant professor of pediatrics at BCM’s Center for Cell and Gene Therapy. Kew is an assistant member at TMHRI. Collaborators include Nabil Ahmed, an assistant professor of pediatrics at BCM; Robert Grossman, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at The Methodist Neurological Institute; Michael Scheurer, an assistant professor of pediatrics at BCM and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; Ann Leen, an assistant professor of pediatrics at BCM and an instructor at Texas Children’s Hospital; and Suzanne Powell, a pathologist at TMHRI.Microscope array will ID TBIdentifying patients who have drug-resistant tuberculosis now involves storing samples of sputum – saliva and respiratory mucus – in an incubator for several weeks to see if TB bacteria grow. But to stop the spread of TB, which kills nearly 2 million people a year, infected patients need to be treated quickly. Rice’s Rebecca Richards-Kortum and Edward Graviss of TMHRI are working on a low-cost “array microscope” that incorporates 24 miniature microscopes working in parallel to screen a patient’s entire sample simultaneously, which would reduce the chance of missing an infection. They are also developing image-processing algorithms that will automatically identify and quantify the presence of TB in microscope images and drastically cut the time it takes to diagnose the disease.“Effective and affordable antibiotic treatments for TB already exist,” they wrote, “which means improvements in diagnosis will directly translate into lives saved.”Richards-Kortum is Rice’s Stanley C. Moore Professor of Bioengineering, and Graviss is an associate member at TMHRI and a research scientist at the Center for Molecular and Translational Human Infectious Diseases. Speaking with Forbes, Lori Goler, vice president of people, said, “Diversity is critical to our mission at Facebook, because we serve a community of 2 billion around the world, and of course there’s diversity in that community.”The company, according to Forbes, employs between 33 and 35 percent women, and there has been considerable gains among women employed with computer science and engineering backgrounds, as well as a 500 percent increase in employment among those of African descent since 2014. Like most of the companies on the year-end list, Bain offers ample benefits, including several months of paid maternity leave, comprehensive vacation and insurance policies, and one of the world’s best 401K offers. Just outside of the top ranking companies, McKinsey & Co. stayed within the top 20, while other notable heavyweights like Microsoft (39th), Capital One (69th), Deloitte (77th), Accenture (83rd), and Apple (84th), the world’s most successful consumer company, fell to the lower ends of the list.Despite having the second most profitable year in company history, falling shortly behind it’s 2015 figures, Apple has been steadily dropping down Glassdoor’s annual Best Of list, posting its worst standing in the history of the ranking—nearly 50 spots worse than last year’s ranking of 36th overall.Considering, however, that the annual ranking is comprises of over 500,000 companies, this drop may not be as serious as it would appear. The overall Glassdoor rating for Apple was 4.3, in contrast to Facebook, which boasts a current 4.6 rating. The average Glassdoor rating for employers, for context, is 3.3.Some SurprisesNot every company included in the Glassdoor Best Of list could be considered a traditional MBA recruiters, including beloved U.S. west coast fast food chain In-N-Out Burger (fourth overall), growing athletic leisurewear empire Lululemon (sixth), wine company E. & J. Gallo Winery(14th), Delta Airlines (17th), and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (19th), which provides “Excellent dental and medical coverage,” according to an anonymous employee. Can you give an example?“MBA program faculty reside in Northern Virginia and have weekly office hours, and are available to meet you at your convenience,” Hansson says.  “Emails work well too.”In terms of faculty and staff, Pamplin is a very small college. This makes it a rather intimate experience. In addition, the school recently appointed “some of the most promising new and accomplished faculty from around the world,” says Dean Sumichrast. He admitted that this was an “intentional change” to increase diversity, raise expectations, and improve faculty research and teaching.In particular, the school has made prominent strides toward diversity. Among faculty, the percentage of underrepresented minorities is now 16 percent from 0 percent four years ago.Sumichrast also states, in the same speech, that the college is a very open and friendly environment, “An important part of community is becoming more welcoming and inclusive of everyone, and we have become more welcoming,” he says.What club would you recommend for a student to check out and why?“As our MBA program is a part-time offering, our students are busy with life and work,” Hansson explains. “Clubs are not available. However, we offer several networking and alumni mentoring opportunities each semester.”In regards to networking, the MBA Career Network, launched in 2014, is an opportunity to match MBA students with alumni volunteers. And with a vast Hokie Nation to choose from, there are many mentoring opportunities across Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Roanoke.As for opportunities beyond clubs, Evening MBA students can choose to participate in a study abroad course to gain international experience.
